Best Latvian-made cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt and butter to be determined

The Cooperative Society Latvian Central Union of Dairy Farmers (LPCS) in conjoint with the International Exhibition Company BT 1 organises the premium quality dairy product competition. The award ceremony will take place during the opening of the International Food Fair Riga Food 2013 0n 4 September at Kipsala International Exhibition Centre.

This year, the competition is held in six product groups – cream cheese, processed cheese, glazed curd snacks, low-fat curd, drinking yoghurt and premium quality butter.

This year’s food competition aims to collect and bring out the best of the dairy business and masters experience and to promote dairy products as part of healthy diet.

The LPCS Chairman Jānis Šolks tells: “LDC has been organising the dairy products competition within the framework of Riga Food for seventeen years already. We continue the tradition of finding out and highlighting the premium quality dairy products. Milk processing plants are getting ready for the competition with a great responsibility to show off their achievements and to evaluate those of their rivals. The Riga Food medal is a sign that helps consumers to identify superior quality products.”

Dairy farmers producing fresh and processed curd cheeses are going to compete in the cheese competition. The curd competition on turn will assess Latvian-made low-fat curd with fat content of up to 0.5%. According to LPCS data, Latvia produced 14,000t of fresh cheese and curd, and 1800t of processed cheese in 2012.

The butter competition this year is open to producers of sweet and ripened matured cream butter with a milk fat content of not less than 80%, a maximum water content of 16% and non-fat solids of up to 2%) producers. Latvia produced 4900t of superior quality butter in 2012.

The drinking yogurt competition will determine the best Latvian-made yogurt with a fat content of up to 2% and yoghurt with a fat content from 2% to 4%. According to LPCS Latvia produced 7500t of drinking yoghurt in 2012.

Judges of the Riga Food 2013 food competition will also choose the best products in the group of the glazed sweet cheese curd.

The board of judges of the Riga Food 2013 competition: chair of the board – Inga Ciproviča, Dr. sc. ing., Dean of the Food Technology Faculty, Latvia University of Agriculture; judges – Jānis Šolks, Board Chairman of the Cooperative Society Latvian Central Union of Dairy Farmers, Inese Ozollapa, Senior Expert in Reference and Certification at BIOR, Lilita Ozola, Dr. sc. ing., emeritus scientist and assistant professor of the Latvia University of Agriculture, Una Rubīna, Senior Expert of Food and Veterinary Service (FVS), Lolita Neimane, RSU doctorant and dietician, Rigonda Lerhe, Deputy State Secretary, Director of Market and Direct Support Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, and Sandra Dieziņa, a journalist of the business newspaper Dienas Bizness.

The winners will receive the Riga Food 2013 gold, silver and bronze medals, LPCS certificates of recognition and money prizes.

LPCS annually organises the premium quality food competitions held within the framework of the International Food Fair Riga Food that have gained a considerable popularity among dairy farmers, professionals and gourmets.
